The Kathmandu Valley Rim Trek is an exceptional option for those looking to experience the beauty of Nepal without venturing too far from the capital. This trek provides stunning Himalayan views, rich cultural encounters, and scenic landscapes, making it perfect for short adventures or those who prefer a more accessible trekking experience.

The trek begins at Sundarijal, located about 15 km northeast of Kathmandu, which is easily accessible within a 45-minute drive from Thamel, the main tourist hub. As the starting point for various trails, Sundarijal is also a popular picnic spot, attracting local visitors. The initial trail passes through the Shivapuri National Park, contributing significantly to the local water supply.

After a comfortable 4-5 hour trek from Sundarijal to Chisapani, enjoy the crisp climate of Chisapani, which translates to “cold water” in Nepali. Early risers will be rewarded with a breathtaking sunrise over the Himalayas. The following trek from Chisapani to Nagarkot, which takes approximately 6–7 hours, leads you through lush forests and vibrant farming fields. Once at Nagarkot, gaze at one of the best panoramic sunset views in the region, followed by a mesmerizing sunrise the next day.

For those with more time, the trek continues from Nagarkot to Dhulikhel, which lasts about six hours and showcases rich biodiversity and local lifestyles. From Dhulikhel, the journey proceeds to Namobuddha, renowned for its ancient monastery, and then to Balthali, culminating in Panauti, one of Nepal's oldest towns filled with historical temples. This captivating trek through the Kathmandu Valley Rim is sure to leave lasting memories.

Kathmandu Valley Rim Trek Route and Itinerary

Day 01

Arrive at Kathmandu airport transfer to Hotel

After you arrive in Kathmandu airport please check our company board outside the main gate there will be our airport representative you will meet with him, and he will be transferred to hotel by private vehicle and our representative will help you to check in your hotel after that if time enough, representative will take you to our office for short briefing about the trip but if not enough time then give a short trip brief in hotel and request to pay the due balance for the trip. Overnight at Hotel

Day 02

Kathmandu Sightseeing and trek preparation

After breakfast, tour guide will take to you for full day sightseeing in historical monuments sightseeing places including Pashupatinath temple (The biggest Hindu temple), Boudhanath (the biggest Buddhist stupa), Swayambhunath known as monkey temple and Kathmandu Durbar square then drive back to hotel. Overnight at hotel.

Day 03

Kathmandu drive to Sundarijal then trek to Chisapani (2,140 m)

Early morning one hour drive to trek start point in Sundarijal. You need to enter the Shivapuri National Park to the north of the Kathmandu valley. It takes four to five hour for trekking from Sundarijal to Chisapani. You will be crossing the Tamang settlement in Mulkharka and ridge through the oak and rhododendron forest before Chisapani. Overnight at guesthouse.

Day 04

Chisapani trek to Nagarkot (2,163 m)

It will take six to seven hours of easy hike. Crossing the dense forest through a small village at Chauki Bhanjyang, you need 3 hours to reach Nagarkot. This hill station is world famous for Himalayan views and sunrise and sunset is just wonderful heaven on earth. Overnight at Hotel.

Day 05

Nagarkot trek to Dhulikhel (1,600 m)

Early morning provides excellent mountain views and best sunrise on clear days that are absolutely spectacular. Today our trek is start at first passing through pine forest alongside road head with occasional encounter with wildlife. You hike past beautiful countryside, villages, small tea-shops, farmlands etc. The trail passes along Rohini Bhanjyang, Tanchok witnessing majestic panorama of the mountains like Gauri Shankhar, Dorje Lhakpa. Soon, Dhulikhel is reached and admire majestic Himalayan views and the valley below from the hilltop. Dhulikhel is an ancient Newari city with several interesting Hindu Temples. Overnight at Hotel

Day 06

Dhulikhel trek to Namobuddha (1,750 m)

The Dhulikhel to Namobuddha hiking is easy; one-day hiking that combines culture, village lifestyle with incredible scenic views of the Himalayas. The trail is not difficult as we walk for about four hours to Namo Buddha where we will have lunch as well as an opportunity to explore the Gumba (Buddhist Monastery). Namo Buddha is sacred to the Buddhists because it is said that here Lord Buddha in a previous life sacrificed himself in order to allow a hungry tigress to feed her young cubs. It ranks as one of the three holy Buddhist sites in the Kathmandu Valley, along with Boudhanath and Swayambhu. Overnight at Monastery.

Day 07

Namobuddha trek to Balthali village (1,730 m)

Sunrise view and again you will have touchy view of fertile farms and villages located on the way as we move ahead. During the trek you can walk over the part of the countryside to the east of Kathmandu is at its best, with forests and farmlands, streams and rivers, hills and plateaus. Overnight at Hotel/Resort.

Day 08

Balthali village trek to Panuiti then drive to Kathmandu (1,350 m)

Moring enjoy in Balthali. Today easy trek to Panauti where you can see typical Newari village, this traditional Newar village is particularly rural and Panauti is home of large number of fascinating temples, after visiting Panauti drive back to Kathmandu. Overnight at Hotel.

Day 09

Depart Kathmandu or extend your trip

We will drop you at the airport by our private vehicle according to your airport time. It is recommended to reach the airport at least two hours prior to departure.

Overview & Essentials

Typically, packages include accommodation, meals during the trek, guide and porter services, permits, and ground transportation. Flight costs, insurance, and personal expenses are usually excluded.
While prior trekking experience helps, most treks are designed to be achievable with average fitness. Some high-altitude treks may require conditioning or preparation beforehand.
There is no strict age limit, but participants should be reasonably fit. Trekkers above 60 or with health conditions should consult a doctor before the trip.
